Growbag Upcycled is a Cape Town-based brand dedicated to transforming discarded billboard vinyl into sustainable planter bags, eco-friendly lifestyle accessories, and unique corporate gifting solutions. By turning waste into functional and stylish products, we prove that sustainability can be practical, creative, and impactful.
HOW IT STARTED
Life in the city is filled with advertisements – giant billboards lining highways, shopping malls, and buildings. When the campaigns end, these massive sheets of PVC usually become waste. But when our founder, Manuela Wall, looked at them, she saw more than ads. She saw potential: the chance to give discarded material a second life.
Originally from Germany, Manuela moved to Cape Town to follow her passion for gardening. While working with Soil For Life, an organisation teaching communities to grow their own food, she noticed many gardeners planting in shoes or plastic bags due to a lack of proper containers. At the same time, she saw piles of unused billboard vinyl going to waste.
The idea was born: to create life out of material that would otherwise be thrown away.
What began as a personal project has grown into Growbag Upcycled – a movement toward urban greening, conscious living, and circular design.

Our upcycled planter bags are crafted from durable recycled billboard vinyl and stitched with wax-coated polyester thread.
